Welcome to my student teaching ePortfolio! This electronic portfolio contains the highlights of my student teaching experience where I was able to apply the concepts and theories that I had learned in Regent University’s teacher education program in two classrooms.
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be a teacher. My mother was an elementary teacher and I wanted to be just like her. In high school I realized that doing something because someone else did would not necessarily lead to fulfillment in my life calling. After a period of time where I was enamored with science (chemistry to be precise), I realized through volunteering in a faith-based children’s program that I loved teaching. I loved the light in the eyes of the five- and six-year olds in my group when they finally made sense of something that had confused them. I loved hearing their stories about what they had done with their parents, with their friends, and in the classroom. I had tasted teaching, and loved it.
At Regent University I began to develop my love of teaching and learn the skills I needed to be an effective teacher in the classroom. New to public school classrooms, I had a lot to learn not only how to manage a classroom of 15 to 30 students, but also the basic lay out and operation of a classroom. Four semesters of practicum experience, where I observed Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade classrooms in a local district. In each classroom I had the chance to learn from amazing teachers. In my classes at Regent I learned the theories to create a positive and welcoming classroom.
Each student is unique and has different learning needs. While standards of learning have set clear guidelines on the content that each student is to learn in each grade, one teaching method cannot reach each student. While student teaching in a 4th grade class containing the gifted cluster under the guidance of an amazing teacher, I was able to experience layering my instruction with different teaching strategies make the content accessible to each student in the classroom. I found that there are many ways to do this, but the use of technology in the classroom allows students to experience content through video representations, pictures, and a wider variety of educational texts.
During my time at Regent I was able to experience both public and private education and experience the roles both types of schools play in the community. School is so much more than a building where children learn about language, mathematics, science and social science, it is a place where the community can provide support each other through providing support to their children and their parents.
I have learned so much about education at in Regent’s teacher education program. As I continue to learn I will continue to develop on the foundation of teaching skills I learned at Regent and solidified through my student teaching experience. I look forward to growing as an educator as a teacher in the classroom.
I hope you enjoy looking through my ePortfolio at the work I have done so far!
